Copper plate engraving printed on hand laid paper, by Giovanni Battista Piranesi. The view is of the Greek temple complex dedicated to Neptune at Positano, Italy. The work foreshadows the Greek Rivival which emerges early in the 19th century. Piranesi, born, Venice 1720, d. Rome 1778. The work is from the last series completed before his death and were then published posthumously by his son, Francisco Piranesi, in Paris, 1805. Framed dimensions: 39” x 31 1/2” Piranesi was a talented product of the enlightenment as an artist, architect, archeologist, designer, collector and dealer in prints and antiquities, promoting the supremacy of Ancient Roman accomplishments. The unique drama and scale of his works lead to his election as a fellow of the Society of Antiquaries in England, 1757 and Knighted by the Pope, 1765.
